April Merritt, M.D.

Dr. April A. Merritt is board eligible in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a member of the Florida Obstetric and Gynecologic Society, a member of the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery, and is part of the Women’s Surgical Leadership Initiative.

Dr. Merritt was born and raised in Charleston, SC. The daughter of a medical surgical Registered Nurse and a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air force, she recognized her passion very early for medicine and her drive to excel. This led her to the College of Charleston where she majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry while researching Organic Chemistry. She co-authored over 20 organic chemistry research papers and spoke at many scientific meetings. Dr. Merritt felt the need to pursue a career interacting and helping people on a clinical level, which led her to decide to turn down an offer to continue her research and obtain a PhD. Instead, in 1998 she entered Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.

During that time, she did research on Helicobacter pylori and its affect on stomach tissue and its action in the stomach. This led to another co-authored published research paper. She also volunteered at a local pregnancy shelter for teenage girls and participated in education in the schools on sexually-transmitted diseases. Though she always had a passion for women’s health, it was her fourth year medical school rotation on labor and delivery that ignited her dream of becoming an OBGYN. During her medical school years, she met and married her husband, an Army officer and West Point graduate. With him by her side, she completed medical school in 2004.

With the absolute support of her husband, she moved to Orlando Florida to do her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology. During residency, they completed their family with the birth of their two sons. As a Resident Physician, Dr. Merritt trained in obstetrics, to include high-risk, and minimally invasive surgery. She also trained to do robotic surgery and developed a passion for laparoscopic and vaginal surgery.

She entered private practice in 2009 and currently practices general Obstetrics and Gynecology. She treats high-risk pregnancy conditions, abnormal uterine bleeding, ovarian cysts and pelvic pain and does infertility workups and contraceptive management. Of note, she specializes in laparoscopic surgery, to include vaginal and laparoscopic hysterectomies and surgery for vaginal prolepse. She also continues to take an interest in writing and education and combines the two by writing the medical Q and A for the local Orlando magazine dedicated to pregnancy and postpartum: babyourself magazine. In her spare time she enjoys spending it with her boys, catching up on reading, or going out with her husband.
