Colposcopy is a way of looking at the cervix through a special magnifying device, a colposcope, equipped with a light source. The colposcope can enlarge the normal view allowing the doctor to find problems that cannot be seen by the eye alone. A colposcopy is recommended if your Pap result suggests the need for further examination of the cervix. If an abnormal area is seen, a small sample (biopsy) will be taken. Colposcopy is not uncomfortable and takes only a few minutes.
